It’s been established that I am a fan. When I like something, a book, a musical, a performer, a PopTart flavor I am all in.
I am also a fan of fans. Being a fan is one of the ways, as adults, that we can tap into what it was like to be a kid. To get excited because your show or your song is on, to turn it up, to buy the Tiger Beat because Shaun Cassidy is on the cover, is a call back to the unbridled joy of childhood.
When people roll their eyes because they’re too mature, or erudite for fandom, I put them in the category of pompous. They’re not my people. You don’t have to be a fan of the same things as I am, but I am passionate about some things and appreciate that same intensity in others. Lukewarm seems a joyless way to go through life.
I have fangirled in this space many times, from Davy Jones to “Outlander” to “Hamilton” to Kroger Click List. Now, as the end draws near, you’re going to hear about “Game of Thrones.”
